Inclusiveness & Diversity Committee

The IDC is dedicated to creating a shared school community of families and educators that embraces and reflects the diversity of our District and our City. Creating such a community takes intentional and collaborative work; our mission is to raise the collective awareness and cultural competencies of members of the community. We are committed to making MSC a school where all voices are heard, valued, and respected in shaping an inclusive and welcoming community.

Our Work

Inclusive Culture

We seek to include all voices in co-creating school culture and activities.  We support pathways for those who experience barriers to community participation.  Examples of these pathways include facilitating language accessibility, intentionally balancing opportunities for community building and fundraising, and making volunteer opportunities more accessible to a wider pool of parents.

Outreach

We conduct expanded outreach to families and pre-K programs from under-represented populations to increase diversity -- race, class, language, family structure, disabilities, and more.

Community Building

We use events and other activities to support community building within MSC.  These are designed to increase the cultural competency of staff and families and welcome families of all backgrounds to participate. These events demonstrate that our community is enhanced and enriched by a wide spectrum of values, backgrounds, and experiences.

Facilitating Connections

We are committed to creating a safe space for people to engage in difficult conversations.  We facilitate pathways for those who experience barriers to responsiveness within the school structure.  These pathways include resource coordination and advocacy.

Partnering with Administration

We endeavor to help the MSC administration to be a leading community voice in response to local and global issues that are culturally or socially impactful to members of our community.  We recognize this involves pushing beyond systemic boundaries and we exist to partner with the administration in finding necessary resources to support this work.

"It is with gratitude and humility that we acknowledge that we are learning, speaking, and gathering on the ancestral homelands of the Lenape (Lenapehoking) who were violently displaced as a result of European settler colonialism over the course of 400 years. The Lenape are a diasporic people that remain closely connected with this land and are its rightful stewards. We pay honor and respect to their ancestors past and present as we commit to building a more inclusive and equitable space for all.”
